Spend Time Off Outside

School breaks are a great time to get together with friends! Ages 4–14 can build shelters, go orienteering, spend time hiking, or even shred Hale’s many miles of trails on a mountain bike. Weather permitting, they may enjoy sledding, snowshoeing, and other wintry activities, too. At the end of each day, they’ll warm up by the fire as they reflect on their adventures.

In December, we spend most of our time outdoors. Depending on the weather we might be playing in the snow, sledding, and seeing the woods through a new, frozen lens! December Vacation Days is a great way for summer campers to explore Hale in a different season and learn how nature adapts for winter. Given this year’s calendar, there will be two 2-day sessions of December Vacation Days (Dec. 26–27 and Dec. 30–31). Register for either or both!

Frequently Asked Questions

During School Vacation Days, we place participants in age-based groups of 10–12 people. We typically serve 4–5 groups per program, and they stay together throughout the 3-day program.

It all depends on the season! Most of our activities are based outside. We may build snow people or go sledding in the winter, or spend time fishing and boating in the spring. We rotate activities so children have opportunities to try a variety of things. Everything we do is nature-based, appropriately challenging, and adventurous. We build community through teambuilding, and we encourage self-expression.

While we generally follow the adage, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices,” sometimes Mother Nature can make the outdoors feel a little too adventurous. During colder months, our programs spend time by the fire in Powissett Lodge or the Trading Post. In the spring, our Fern Valley yurts provide shelter from heavy rain.
