Four Outdoor Activities for Fall

Nature puts on quite a show during the fall, but it moves fast. Trees pop with brilliant colors while leaving acorns, pinecones, and seeds for wildlife’s winter burrows and later spring growth. Look beyond the treetops, and you’ll spot migrating birds in large numbers, moving in those impressive V formations. Whether you’re a young child spending hours at the park or an adult with a 10-minute break in the middle of the day, here are a few ways to make sure the season doesn’t pass by too quickly.

Nature I Spy

Use our I Spy Fall activity and turn your time outside into an adventure! Don’t see something on there? Add it and customize your search. From mushrooms and acorns to leaves and soon-to-be hibernating critters, the great outdoors is waiting for you.

Leaf Printing Magic

During your adventure, grab fallen leaves to turn them into art. Place the leaves you’ve collected under printer or tracing paper and rub crayons over them to create beautiful designs. Each leaf has its own unique pattern; it’s like nature’s fingerprints. Try different colors and see what you come up with.

Stick Picture Frames

Collect large twigs from the forest floor and make them into beautiful picture frames. You can glue them (adults should help children with a hot glue gun) or use string to tie them together to display photos or even the leaf prints you’ve made.

Pinecone Bird Feeder

Grab some pinecones on your nature walk, as they are perfect for making bird feeders. Roll them in peanut butter, then in birdseed, and hang them from a tree branch. This will be a great place for birds to collect food for the winter or have a quick snack during their travels south.
