By  May 19, 2026 4 min read
Children sit around a table outdoors, drawing on paper with washable markers. A girl in the foreground smiles as she colors, while others work on their projects in the background.

Activity

Memory Murals

Students work in small groups to create visual murals that capture meaningful memories from the school year. These murals highlight learning, growth, friendships, and shared experiences, helping students reflect and celebrate their journey.

Objectives

  • Reflect on personal and group experiences
  • Creatively reinforce key learning concepts and vocabulary
  • Appreciate different perspectives and work as a team

Materials

  • Poster boards (or flattened cardboard, a more eco-friendly option)
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils (or sidewalk chalk, if outdoors)
  • Optional: magazines, glue, scissors

Run the Activity

  1. Reflect: Ask students to think about important moments from the school year.
    • Favorite lessons or projects
    • Funny or unexpected moments
    • Challenges and successes
    • Friendships and teamwork
  2. Work in Groups: In small groups of 3–5, students share ideas and choose memories to include.
  3. Create Murals: Each group co-designs a mural that includes:
    • Drawings or symbols
    • Key vocabulary words
    • Quotes or meaningful phrases
    • Creative storytelling elements
  4. Gallery Walk: Students walk around and observe other groups’ murals, taking note of similarities and differences.

Reflect & Debrief

“Remember all you’ve learned — your life is a masterpiece in progress.”

  • Why are these memories important?
  • Were all the groups’ memories the same or different?
  • What makes certain memories stand out?
  • What did you learn about your classmates?
  • How have you grown this year?

Notes for Facilitators

  • To complete this activity outside, create chalk murals for a fun, large-scale experience.
  • Remember to take photos of murals and share with families to celebrate students’ learning and growth.
