More than 1,100 acres of land at Hale Education, a nonprofit in Dover and Westwood, are now permanently protected from development. The area is roughly 22 times the size of Boston Common.

The significance of this permanent conservation decision was on display during Hale’s Fall Equinox Celebration on Sept. 24, which brought together representatives from land trusts and other organizations involved in land conservation and public access.

Mardi Fuller, a writer, speaker and lifelong outdoor adventurer, was the keynote speaker. Conservation is only part of the equation when it comes to making outdoor spaces accessible, Fuller said, adding that simply allowing the public onto land does not necessarily mean everyone feels able to use it.
